Anyone Willing To Test High Road 2.0?

Ok folks, I’ve gotten High Road Training 2.0 to the point that it’s ready to begin testing. I’ve built just enough features for it to work well, but you will find bugs and missing features, which is exactly why we’re testing.

For those who don’t know, High Road Training is an online training program that teaches the CDL manual and more. You must know the CDL manual to pass the written exams for your CDL permit and all of your endorsements. There are additional sections that cover Logbook Rules, New York State coils endorsement, Flatbed Securement, and more

It’s best to let you guys in early so you can tell me what you like, what you don’t like, and what features you would like to see. I could spend the rest of my life guessing, and I’d still be wrong about 75% of it.

I’m not even going to give any instructions. I’m just going to give you a link and let you guys have at it. I’ll watch the system as you use it and monitor this conversation for your feedback. I will add a ‘feedback’ menu item soon, but there isn’t one yet.

Go ahead and give this a try and see what you think:

High Road Training 2.0

I would really appreciate your help with this! I need all the feedback I can get to build better features and a more effective program.

Give me your feedback here in this conversation, and do not be shy about it! I’m not looking for compliments; I’m looking for bugs, missing features, and ways to improve it, so be honest about the shortcomings. That’s what I’m hoping for.

Thanks so much! I hope to see a bunch of you in there!

I’ve only done the first two pages in the Introduction section but I’m really liking what I’m seeing so far. The “Look Up Answer” “View Hints” and “Key Fact” buttons are really helpful and the review with tutor option seems like it could be incredibly beneficial. When taking the quizzes the correct answers have an “@“ symbol in front of them telling you it’s the answer to that question, I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be showing that or not. I also had the tutor do a summary of the questions I answered and it went over a completely different set of questions than the ones I answered. Aside from that I like it and I’m really happy to see the High Road is back. It’s been hard to find a replacement for it, I’ve tried the cristcdl that @JayP recommended, and its helpful but it’s just not on the same level as the high road was.

Thanks for testing it @akdriver97! I really appreciate that!

Sorry about that! I had those there for me during testing and forgot to remove them. I’ve removed them now. But wow, that sure made the quizzes easier, didn’t it?

I’m gonna look at the message history to see what happened there. Right now I don’t think I’m exposing your question history to AI, so it may not have known what questions you were referring to. The review works really well when you choose “Review this quiz with the tutor” because then AI has a list of all the questions and answers from your quiz. That’s on me.

I also haven’t given you guys any hints yet about what to say to the AI, which I’ll do today as well. If you ask for a particular question number to review, such as “Review question 42,” then AI will have all the information from that question and cover it thoroughly.

I’ll make some updates this afternoon and I’d love to see you test it more after that!

Thanks again! I’ll make some updates!

Thanks man been waiting for this definitely use to get my permit within the next week.

Great timing then! Have at it, and get ready for that exam! Give me some feedback whenever you get the chance.

Good grief, that’s not helpful on my part! I’ve made an update that will hopefully fix that. He just didn’t have the information he needed so he just created it off the top of his head! That’s AI for ya. They’ll do that sometimes.

For anyone willing to test this - at least pick a couple of random pages from the program and answer the questions and have the tutor review the quiz (you’ll see a button for that) and talk to him a bit. I’m trying to get a feel for what’s working and what needs work.

Thanks!

I ran through 2 sections in Introduction and one from Air Brakes. It seems to work well enough.

Comments:

In Review, show the incorrect answer as well as the correct one.

If you skip one question, the warning on Submit says “You haven’t answered all of the questions". Can you mention the question numbers missed: "You haven’t answered questions 3 and 9” or at least "You haven’t answered 2 of the questions.

In the quiz review each section starts with Performance Summary for each quiz set. Can you add the section name there, or at least in that "[Quiz review request]” block along with that quiz session gibberish.

Also in the Review, how do you get back to your quiz dashboard? How about the Dashboard button instead is hitting up the three line menu?

I love multiple choice questions. In my CDL Theory classes I had my own mini-lesson called “Multiple Choice Science" and talked about strategies for various question types. Want a copy of the slides?

Right? :joy: you’re just trying to guarantee us that 100% passing grade is all. I asked it to review the questions when I hadn’t missed any and maybe that was what caused it to review a completely different set of them? I just tried it again on another page I went through and this time it reviewed the correct set of questions. I also asked it to review a specific question like you mentioned “Review question 10” and it pulled up that question without any problem. The “@“ signs are gone now too.

Thanks for giving it a spin, Errol!

Yeah, I have to be more specific with my instructions for how to conduct a review. I’ll update that today.

Yap, I can update that.

Well, the quizzes always contain some review questions from other sections, as well. And when a person is halted and put in review mode, there is no section. I’ll take a look at that. The gibberish is the quiz_session_id that I have to give to AI so it can grab the results of the quiz. I may keep that code there but make that message a little more useful.

I’ll take a look at that. I was hesitant to put buttons everywhere pointing to everywhere else, so for now, the menu contains links to the main areas of the app. I’ll review it and see what might work better.

Yes! Absolutely. I would love that. You can email them to brett@truckingtruth.com or put a link to them here if you have them online somewhere. I appreciate that!

Thanks a ton for the feedback, Errol! I’ll document the updates here as I make them.

Excellent! That’s progress! I appreciate you testing it out!

I encourage anyone who is willing to test out this program to give it a try and tell me how I can improve it. If you have the CDL exam ahead of you or you need to renew your Hazmat, the High Road is up to the task!

Further improvements on the way!

Ok, I made quite a few improvements to it today so that the tutor gives better responses. I didn’t change the look of anything, so you won’t notice any difference by looking at it. If you talk to the tutor, you should get more accurate and helpful responses.

Come on, you guys! Give it a try! Thanks!

I was really excited to have the high road back but I’ve been having a lot of fun just interacting with the ai tutor, I’ve been going through the “Test Your Knowledge” sections from the cdl manual itself and asking the ai those questions and it’s been having no problem with them. It did struggle with one hazmat one but once I specified where I got the question from it was then able to answer it. I asked it questions from other cdl test sites from around the web just to see what it’s capable of and it’s been able to answer those no problem too. Does the ai tutor learn from the users like how we interact with it or just from the high road material itself? I noticed this afternoon that my chat/review history went back to yesterday when I first started messing with it, and then checking now it only goes back to about 5 hours earlier today. Does it keep your review/chat history for a certain amount of time or does it save a certain amount of interactions before deleting the oldest ones? I agree with @Errolv about getting back to the quiz dashboard from the review. When in the high road sections you have a back button at the top right but when in review you don’t. I find myself swiping from left side of the screen to go back to the previous page as opposed to clicking the menu icon and then finding the quiz dashboard or test I was on.

I just saw this tonight. I will be going through it shortly and will let you know what I see

Yeah, he can search the CDL manual for answers to your questions. So it works really well, especially if you ask a rather specific question that’s answered somewhere in the manual.

If you ask, “Should I get a CDL?” you will get a decent answer, but that’s not what the CDL manual covers, so it’s just AI-generated in general. But if you ask, “Why does releasing the air from the air brake system lock up the brakes?” you will get a very specific answer from the CDL manual.

I do gather facts about each person and present those to the tutor. So if you say you prefer shorter answers or your name is “Mike” or any kind of facts about yourself, the tutor will see those. I only create facts after every 10 messages I think, so there’s a bit of a delay, but I may update that to create facts more often.

So you can give him facts about yourself, like your preferences for interacting with the tutor or your reasons for taking the course, and the tutor will get those facts and be able to use them.

Right now, I’m feeding the tutor the last 10 messages you sent along with the last 10 responses from the tutor. Anything older gets dropped right now. I do create summaries of conversations after every 10 messages you send, but I’m not using them right now. I may start feeding him some summaries as well. I do have even more options for digging up relevant discussions from the past, but I haven’t implemented those yet.

Navigation is always a compromise in these apps. It’s a bit tricky, and every decision has trade-offs. The current system is a clean, safe, effective way of doing it, but you won’t always have a back button everywhere you go. After you choose to review a quiz with the tutor, I could create a ‘back to training’ button at the top of the page, which would take you to the training program, but there wouldn’t be a back button in the training program taking you back to the tutor again.

I’m thinking this over and pondering what I can do to enhance this.

I very much appreciate the feedback! This is incredibly helpful and I’m hoping more people will jump in and give it a shot. Thanks!

Very cool! Looking forward to it!
