Got my CDL, got 2 yrs with a company (Schneider)…now I know for sure I want to do nationwide OTR… Schneider tells me they don’t have that option for California drivers. Can ya’ll recommend any good companies for OTR out of Cali?
I’m not sure who’s still standing out there. Legends was at one time big out there and ran mostly 11 or so western states. True coast to coast has modtly gone away in today’s world. If this rail merger goes through with UP and NS it will likely get even slimer. Knight/Swift has a big presence out there also.

Definitely the dynamics have changed. If you’re looking for more of the long runs, true otr style, I’d suggest reefer, usually longer runs but not without its pita factor. As stated, Knight and swift both have presence in CA. Don Hummer is based out of Cedar Rapids IA but does hire out of some areas in ca. They have great equipment, solid pay, lots of work, no nanny state equipment. If you have experience and a clean record, they may be a good fit.

I work for an awesome company that hires out of Calif. 2 yrs minimum, no accidents or tickets. You need a completely clean record. We have guaranteed freight as a private fleet for a meat packing plant in omaha. Great equipment as trailers come back to yard every week. Driver health insurance is $22 per week now, match up to 6% on 401k. Really nice people. Sales on meat!!! Cheap!
Basically u pick up in omaha. They usually give you a choice of destination. I told them i wanted to run all 48 during summer, now im east of Denver. Average 2900 miles a week. Go home every 2 to 3 weeks. We have a lot of freight in Brea, Irvine and Fresno areas.
Last week i went from Omaha to NJ, got a 34 with my brother, then picked up in PA and back to omaha. Next load to Boston. Most loads are above 1100 miles.
APUs and fridge. Manual trucks when available. No forced dispatch. Starting 63 to 66cpm depending on experience, annual raises up to 70cpm. No micromanaging. They really get you home on time. And they didnt think im weird for dressing for halloween to give out candy.
